Steel Service Center Transformation

Steel Plate Warehouse Achieves 85% Efficiency Gain

CLIENT

A major steel service center processing 200+ tons/day of steel plates, beams, and structural sections. 5,000 sqm warehouse with 10-ton bridge crane.

SOLUTION

Installed 24-bay TC-3000 telescopic cantilever rack system with motorized drive. Configured as double-sided with 4 arm levels per side. Each arm rated for 3,000 kg. Narrow aisle design reduced aisle width from 4.5m to 1.8m. Overhead crane picks directly from extended rack arms — zero forklift involvement.

The Challenge

The facility relied on traditional cantilever racks with forklift retrieval. Each plate retrieval took 12-15 minutes: forklift drives to rack, pulls plate to staging area, crane picks from staging area, crane delivers to cutting table. With 40+ retrievals per day, the double-handling consumed 8-10 hours of combined forklift and crane operator time. Forklift collisions damaged 3-5 plates per month, costing $2,000-5,000 in material losses. Aisle widths of 4.5m consumed 60% of floor space.

“The telescopic racks completely transformed our operation. What used to take 15 minutes now takes less than 2. We eliminated two forklifts and reassigned those operators to value-added work. The space savings alone justified the investment.”
